2018-2019 Executive Board Members
President - Philip Koranteng
Philip is a second-year law student from Sterling, Virginia. He is a graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology where he received B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and was a track & field athlete. Prior to law school, Philip worked as an engineer for a mobile ophthalmology company doing LASIK and other refractive eye surgeries in the Philadelphia area. This past summer, Philip was a
Milton Stewart Fellow at the law firm of Tilleke & Gibbins in Hanoi, Vietnam. In addition to serving on the BLSA executive board, Philip is also involved in the Intellectual Property Association and the IP Theory editorial board. Philip looks forward to helping the IU Maurer BLSA support its members throughout their academic and professional careers.
Secretary- Shantanece Ellis
Shantanece is a second-year law student from East Chicago, IN. Shantanece graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington where she received a B.A. in English and minors in Religious Studies and Law and Public Policy. During her 1L summer she interned with IU Student Legal Services and District 10 Pro Bono Project.
Treasurer - Nicola Deans
Nicola Deans is a second-year law student from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Nicola graduated from Michigan State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities Prelaw. While in undergrad, Nicola was a student-athlete, where she competed on the gymnastics team for five years. During her 1L summer Nicola interned with Cisco in the Labor and Employment Group in San Jose, California.
Program Director - Kevin Jones
Kevin is a second-year law student at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. He attended Brooklyn College – City University of New York, where he majored in Television and Radio, minored in African American Studies and Sociology, and graduated in 2017 as valedictorian of his class.
Prior to completing his BA and law school, Kevin served as founder and host of Gifted Soul NYC – an independent artist development, management, PR, and showcase company.
As an undergraduate, Kevin interned over two years with the Honorable L. Priscilla Hall, Associate Justice for the Appellate Division: Second Judicial Department of the Supreme Court of New York, and Kings County DA’s Office in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to serving as BLSA Program Chair, Kevin serves as an Admissions Fellow, Outreach Legal Literacy Teacher, and Member of the Public Interest Law Foundation.
During his first year of law school, Kevin served as a 1L Representative for the Student Bar Association and Dean’s Advisory Board, and was among three 1L research assistants for Professor Charles G. Geyh. This past summer, Kevin was both an intern at the Legal Aid Society of New York – Criminal Practice Division in Brooklyn, NY and a mentor for Ronald H. Brown Law School Prep Program’s Foundation Class for men of color entering their sophomore year of college.
A long time community activist, Kevin is committed to serving the underrepresented population in the criminal justice system and plans to be a public defense attorney upon graduation. Kevin looks forward to being a resource for incoming BLSA members and is excited to contribute to the advancement of BLSA through innovative academic programming and impactful events.
